Metro In Dino Review: Love, Life, and Songs that Stay with You

Today, finally, the film hit the big screens. What made me excited? There are a few reasons: the soulful songs, the impactful dialogues, Anurag Basu’s direction, and most importantly, the focus on love as a core theme. Let’s start with Basu himself.

Anurag Basu has always stood out from the crowd. His films might not be perfect, but they leave you with lingering feelings and thoughts that stay long after the end credits. He never follows the herd; he never jumps into the typical “mass masala” bandwagon. Instead, he dares to tell different stories — and Metro In Dino is a prime example.

The film doesn’t revolve around any one “big face” or star power. It’s an ensemble of seven to eight well-known actors, each with their own narrative arc. It feels refreshing to see a movie like this get a theatrical release in today’s times.

A Mosaic of Love Stories

At its heart, Metro In Dino explores different stages of love and relationships — from school-time infatuations, to the turbulent 20s of figuring out life and love, to marriages slowly losing their spark, and finally, the mellow companionship of old age.

You’ll find characters running away from commitment, some embracing marriage, some experiencing the monotony of long-term partnerships, and even a few dealing with extramarital attractions. Every stage is showcased through separate stories, each featuring different pairs of actors.

Aditya Roy Kapur represents the young and carefree spirit, paired with Sara Ali Khan. Then there’s Ali Fazal and Fatima Sana Shaikh, portraying the complexities of post-wedding life. Konkona Sen Sharma and Pankaj Tripathi depict the fatigue of a long marriage. Anupam Kher and Neena Gupta show what love looks like in old age.

With so many different stages shown, it’s almost certain that viewers will find something to relate to. If you’ve ever loved, lost, or even just thought deeply about relationships, you’ll see yourself in at least one of these stories.

Music That Hits the Right Notes

One of the strongest points of Metro In Dino is its music. Songs like Jamuna Lage, Mohabbat Kitni Karun, and Dil Ka Kya are absolute bangers and alone make the price of the ticket worth it.

The songs aren’t just there for the sake of it; they beautifully blend into the narrative, reflecting the characters’ feelings. Even if you don’t agree with the stories, the music will move you.

Dialogues and Performances

The dialogues are memorable and impactful. For instance, the line — “One has to fall in love again and again with the same person to spend a lifetime together” — hits hard and feels so true.

The performances are top-notch. Pankaj Tripathi shines with his humor and warmth, while Konkona Sen Sharma balances him with her quiet depth. Aditya Roy Kapur brings a charming, carefree energy, and Sara Ali Khan surprises with her confident portrayal. Neena Gupta, as always, sparkles on screen.

Screenplay & Storytelling

The first half feels stronger and more cohesive. In the second half, the film starts to feel a bit scattered as it juggles multiple storylines. Certain narratives, like Ali Fazal and Fatima Sana Shaikh’s track, sometimes disappear and reappear abruptly, slightly affecting the emotional flow.

Some beautifully written moments, like a scene where a character says “You’re average, just like your father,” build up perfectly but end so quickly that they don’t land as powerfully as they could have.

Final Verdict

Metro In Dino is not a flawless film. It’s not a sixer out of the stadium like Barfi!, but it’s also not as uneven as Jagga Jasoos. It falls somewhere in between — an ambitious attempt that mostly works.

Despite its imperfections, it delivers an emotional, thought-provoking experience. If you loved the trailer, the songs, or simply enjoy stories about love and relationships, this film is definitely worth watching on the big screen.

You might not agree with every narrative choice, but you’ll leave the theatre with a song stuck in your head and a few emotions tugging at your heart.
